WHITECAP KICKS OFF PARTNERSHIP WITH FLOUR BLUFF ISD IN CELEBRATION OF INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION

Whitecap Welcomes Flour Buff ISD Students on January 31 as Part of New Community Partnership

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS—January 2024. Whitecap NPI, an $800 million master-planned destination resort and residential community being developed by Ashlar Development LLC on the north end of Padre Island, today announced its long-term partnership with Flour Bluff Independent School District (FBISD). In celebration of International Environmental Education Day, Whitecap NPI will mark the commencement of this important relationship by hosting XXX FBISD students on Wednesday, January 31st, at 10 a.m. at the Whitecap Preserve located at 14353 Commodores Drive in Corpus Christi, Texas.

This partnership between Whitecap NPI and FBISD signals the opportunity for FBISD staff and students to engage in and learn through Whitecap’s Preserve, a thriving ecosystem within the development here on the Texas coast.  During the kick off event, students and staff will engage with the Whitecap NPI team while receiving a construction update and see firsthand the work underway to support the 30-acre nature preserve.

“Whitecap NPI is excited to support Flour Bluff ISD and the hardworking staff who guide students to bright and prosperous futures,” said Ashlar Development President, Steve Yetts. “The educational opportunities that the Whitecap development can offer to the community and students at large are like no other community. We look forward to embarking on and growing this long-term relationship with the district and The Island.”

“Flour Bluff ISD continues to provide real-world experiences and skills that prepare all students for high-wage, high-demand careers. Through our partnerships with Ashlar Development, Diamond Beach Holdings, IBC Bank, and LJA Engineering, FBISD students enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) will have the opportunity to enjoy a field trip and participate in an engineering lesson at the Whitecap Development on North Padre Island, ” said Chris Steinbruck, Interim Superintendent of Schools for Flour Bluff ISD. “During this field trip the STEM students will learn about the engineering involved in the excavation process that allows for the canal connection that is helping fulfill a twenty-year objective by our community. Additionally, students will be able to recognize and see how this will improve water circulation and quality through the introduction of oxygenated gulf waters to the canals. We are grateful and excited for this unique opportunity to provide our students right here in the FBISD community!”

Whitecap NPI is developing an outdoor education program aimed at fostering project-based learning opportunities and emphasizing their real-world relevance in education. The nature preserve is envisioned to be the green heart of the master-planned community.  Ashlar Development, the master-developer behind Whitecap, has initiated restoration of the preserve’s freshwater ponds by reintroducing plant life and encouraging the migration of wildlife to the area. Additionally,  the Preserve is planned to  include an education center providing FBISD students and the greater community a valuable resource to engage with local ecology on the barrier island.

Additional programming elements envisioned to enhance the public outdoor education program may include:

  • Flour Bluff Oceans Program
  • Texas Aquatic Science Curriculum
  • Texas Parks and Wildlife Aquatic Science Curriculum
  • Texas Waters: Exploring Waters and Watersheds
  • Field trips to the preserve
  • Collecting marine life for a native aquarium
  • Ecosystem assessment
  • Creating and growing connections between formal and informal educators

Facilities and land features being considered to support the above include:

  • Becoming a Texas Aquatic Science Certified Field Site
  • Expanding school group visitation and field investigations
  • Trails and access to desired points of interest
  • Educational features within the preserve
  • Access to the community preserve
  • Access to both saltwater and freshwater ecosystems

Nestled on the largest undeveloped barrier island in the world, the preserve will safeguard the site’s expansive and astounding variety of marine, plant, and animal-life that abound through structural designs and technologies set to ensure longevity for generations to come.
